NDAO HANAVAO – MADAGASCAR Turning plastic waste into utility objects with French designer @alexandreechasseriau at the @ndaohanavaoproject lab. Since 2019, Ndao Hanavao has been collaborating with French designer @alexandreechasseriau on the collection and transformation of plastic waste from the city of Antananarivo. Inspired by craftsmanship and minimalist forms, the designer gives recycled plastic a new lease of life, transforming it into functional, concrete creations that can be mass produced and adapted to local needs, resources and economies. This project trains young Madagascans in vocational integration within the Ndao Hanavao laboratory in the various processes implemented by the designer and enables them to build a sustainable ecological business around these techniques. The objects and materials developed are now marketed by R’Art Plast, a Malagasy eco-responsible company set up in 2022 by five beneficiaries of the Ndao Hanavao project. NDAO HANAVAO – MADAGASCAR Since 2019, @ndaohanavaoproject has been working with designer @laurelinegalliotstudio on a unique creation: a rug made from Polyfloss wool, a material developped by The Polyfloss Factory that turns plastic waste into wool, and upcycled t-shirts. With the lab beneficiaries, the designer developped a hand-woven carpet, evoking the traditional wickerwork and stripes of lambas, emblematic pieces of traditional Malagasy costume. Hosted at the Cité des Cultures in Antananarivo until 9 August 2025, this manifesto-like collective exhibition explores the cycle of materials, from their raw and unsettled state then transformed into reinvented resources. The exhibition presents the research carried out in the laboratory, tied to the transformation of recovered plastic into utilitarian object by the French designer @alexandreechasserieau and the transformation of invasive algae into paper with French designer @samueltomatis. OF SOUL AND JOY x CINEMA TAKE This week, the ‘Cinéma Cent Ans De Jeunesse’ festival is taking place in Paris, and @ofsoulandjoy is pleased to be part of it! OF SOUL AND JOY – WORKSHOP IN MOROCCO A glimpse into the eyes of young photographers! These photos were taken by the children of the Sidi Bernoussi orphanage during a workshop led by @ofsoulandjoy project manager and South-African photographer @jabulanipatdhlamini, and Moroccan photographers Marouane Beslem (@marouanebeslem) and Abdelhamid Belahmidi (@h8mid). Since 2018, the @ofsoulandjoyproject has empowered youth in South Africa through photography. INPULSE – HOMO SARGASSUM COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION InPulse’s artists @camillechedda, Jordan Harrison (@onejhar_), Sheldon Green (@shelmasscore) and @oneikarussell are currently exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as part of the collective exhibition ‘Homo Sargassum’, until July 11. Produced by @toutmondefoundation and curated by @vanessa_selk , the exhibition was first presented at the Museum of Fine Arts of Florida University in Tallahassee (@fsumofa) and is now taking place in New York to celebrate World Ocean Month. ‘Homo Sargassum’ is an art and science exhibition and multidisciplinary program, initiated by Martinican artist @louisa__marajo , that raises public awareness about oceanic pollution through the lens of the sargassum seaweed – algae whose proliferation across the Atlantic and on Caribbean coasts since 2011 has had wide-ranging environmental, social and health-related impacts for coastal communities and ecosystems. The exhibition invites artists, scientists reseachers and scholars from the Caribbean and beyond to share their perspectives on the causes and consequences of the sargassum proliferation, and to present their works that seek potential solutions to this scourge. OF SOUL AND JOY – WORKSHOP IN MOROCCO Since 2018, the @ofsoulandjoy project has been running collaborative workshops to introduce photographic practice and provide social and artistic mentoring to young people from the township of Thokoza and surrounding areas of Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2025, the programme extends its action to Morocco and opens up a dialogue between the two countries through photography. At the Sidi Bernoussi orphanage (Casablanca), twenty children will discover photography through a series of workshops, led by Of Soul and Joy project manager and South-African photographer Jabulani Dhlamini and the Moroccan photographers Marouane Beslem (@marouanebeslem) and Abdelhamid Belahmidi (@h8mid). Marouane Beslem works between photography, video, and sound recording, examining the layers of contemporary Moroccan identity. NDAO HANAVAO – MADAGASCAR Let’s take a look back at @ndaohanavaoproject ’s latest workshop! ⁠ In May, the lab teamed up with Malagasy visual artist @richianny_ratovo for a special workshop on seaweed paper, a sustainable material developed at Ndao Hanavao in collaboration with guest designer @samueltomatis ⁠ The French designer has been working closely with the lab’s participants, pioneering new techniques to transform invasive algae into usable paper.
