OF SOUL AND JOY – A FOUNDATION “What’s the Word? Johannesburg!” just opened at @fondationastichting, produced with the complicity of Rubis Mécénat and curated by @emiliedemonfuruya. Through the eyes of a new generation of South-African photographers, the show offers an intimate portrait of Johannesburg, a city of complexity and contradiction – difficult to love at first sight, but impossible to ignore. Referencing Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson’s 1975 song “Johannesburg,” an anthem of resistance written during the apartheid, the exhibition reflects how those themes still resonate today. NDAO HANAVAO – MADAGASCAR Turning plastic waste into utility objects with French designer @alexandreechasseriau at the @ndaohanavaoproject lab. Since 2019, Ndao Hanavao has been collaborating with French designer @alexandreechasseriau on the collection and transformation of plastic waste from the city of Antananarivo. Inspired by craftsmanship and minimalist forms, the designer gives recycled plastic a new lease of life, transforming it into functional, concrete creations that can be mass produced and adapted to local needs, resources and economies. This project trains young Madagascans in vocational integration within the Ndao Hanavao laboratory in the various processes implemented by the designer and enables them to build a sustainable ecological business around these techniques. The objects and materials developed are now marketed by R’Art Plast, a Malagasy eco-responsible company set up in 2022 by five beneficiaries of the Ndao Hanavao project. NDAO HANAVAO – MADAGASCAR Since 2019, @ndaohanavaoproject has been working with designer @laurelinegalliotstudio on a unique creation: a rug made from Polyfloss wool, a material developped by The Polyfloss Factory that turns plastic waste into wool, and upcycled t-shirts. With the lab beneficiaries, the designer developped a hand-woven carpet, evoking the traditional wickerwork and stripes of lambas, emblematic pieces of traditional Malagasy costume. OF SOUL AND JOY – WORKSHOP IN MOROCCO A glimpse into the eyes of young photographers! These photos were taken by the children of the Sidi Bernoussi orphanage during a workshop led by @ofsoulandjoy project manager and South-African photographer @jabulanipatdhlamini, and Moroccan photographers Marouane Beslem (@marouanebeslem) and Abdelhamid Belahmidi (@h8mid). Since 2018, the @ofsoulandjoyproject has empowered youth in South Africa through photography.
